About fees

The right conversation
starts with your needs.

It’s not all about fees. Ultimately, it’s about client needs and results.

An approach suited to the engagement

The work should
shape the arrangement.

Traditional hourly billing can be appropriate. It is not necessarily the right approach to every engagement.

Your business does not run in six-minute intervals. The nature of the work, your circumstances, and the objectives of the engagement should inform the discussion about fees.

Questions are often easier and less expensive to address than problems. A fee arrangement should support timely communication and efficient attention to issues.

Depending on the engagement, alternatives may include flat fees, fees for defined tasks, performance-based arrangements, or a budget not to exceed an agreed amount. Satisfaction adjustments can also be part of the discussion.

The starting point is the work itself: what needs to be addressed, the circumstances involved, and the client’s objectives. The fee arrangement must be agreed upon, and no single approach will suit every matter.

Available for discussion

Alternatives
to hourly billing.

  • Flat feesAn agreed fee for defined work.
  • Performance-based feesAn arrangement that takes agreed performance considerations into account, where appropriate.
  • Task-based feesFees organized around specified tasks or stages.
  • Budgeted feesA budget not to exceed an agreed amount for the defined engagement.
  • Satisfaction adjustmentsAdjustments that may be discussed as part of the fee arrangement.

These are options for discussion, not a promise that any particular arrangement is available for every matter. The terms depend on the nature and circumstances of the engagement and must be agreed upon.
